Duties of the Office of Receiver of taxes
The Receiver of Taxes collects Property Taxes, School Taxes and Water & Sewer Payments.
Property tax bills are generally mailed out around the middle of January. The tax bill covers a period of January 1st - December 31st. Payments can be made upon receipt of the bill thru February 28th without penalty. The penalty for March is 2%. From April 1st thru April 30th, there is a 3% penalty. From May 1st thru May 31st, there is a 4% penalty plus a $2.00 handling fee. After May 31st, the unpaid taxes are returned to the Dutchess County Commissioner of Finance, 22 Market St., Poughkeepsie, Ny 12601. Telephone number (845) 486-2025.
School taxes for the Arlington, Wappingers and Millbrook Central School Districts for residents within the Town of LaGrange are also collected by this office. The school tax bills are mailed in the beginning of September. The tax bill covers a period of July 1st of the current year thru June 30th of the following year. The due date is set by the school district. After the said date, there is a 2% penalty added to the tax bill. All unpaid school taxes are turned over to the Dutchess county Commissioner of Finance to be re-levied onto the following property tax bill with a 7% penalty.
Water and Sewer bills are mailed out by Environmental Consultants. Their telephone number is (845) 486-1030. The bills are collected by this office. Please refer to your quarterly bill for the specific due date. Any unpaid water or sewer bills after October 15th will be re-levied onto the following property tax bill.

1. Can I pay my tax bill with a credit card?
No, the New York State Comptroller's Office has made a decision that the use of credit cards for tax payments is not allowed.
2. Do I have to pay my taxes in person?
No, Payments can be mailed to the address of the tax office at 120 Stringham Rd., LaGrangeville, NY 12540. The check does not have to be certified. Should you mail your tax bill on the last day of the collection, I advise taxpayers to take the envelope to a U.S. Post Office and have the clerk hand cancel their payment envelope with the current cancellation date.
3. Even if my tax payment is only one day late, do I have to pay the penalty?
Yes, The law does not allow the collecting officer the authority to waive a penalty. The collecting officer is responsible that no discretion can be made according to New York State law.
4. Is there a charge for checks that are returned by my bank?
Yes, The town board adopted a policy to impose a charge of $20.00 for a returned check.
